How should I sort fabric scraps so I actually use them?
Sort scraps by size into strips, squares and crumbs. Pre-cut shapes are far easier to reach for than a tangled bag.
Start here
Sort by size and shape, not by colour. When scraps are already cut into usable pieces, you’ll grab them. A tangled bag gets ignored.
A simple system
- Strips. Trim to a few standard widths and store flat or rolled.
- Squares. Cut to two or three standard sizes and stack in labelled boxes.
- Crumbs. Tiny odd bits go in one jar for improv blocks and mug rugs.
- Larger pieces. Fold and shelve with your main fabric.
Make it a habit
Trim scraps the moment a project is finished, while the rotary cutter is still out. Ten minutes then saves an afternoon later.
Know when to let go
Pieces too small to sew can stuff a pet bed or a pincushion. Fabrics you no longer like can go to a school or craft group.
Use those strips in the weekend scrap strip quilt.
