What is the fastest way to quilt a finished top?

Straight-line quilting with a walking foot on your home machine. Wide spacing is quickest; follow your wadding's guidance.

Straight lines with a walking foot. It’s the quickest machine method, it looks crisp and modern, and it’s easy to get right first time.

Set up

  • Fit a walking foot so all layers feed evenly
  • Lengthen the stitch slightly
  • Baste with spray or plenty of safety pins
  • Roll the sides of the quilt so it fits through the machine

Pick a pattern

Stitching right beside the seams hides the quilting. Parallel lines across the whole top give a bold, graphic texture. A grid adds strength. Use masking tape or the edge of your foot as a guide.

Spacing

Wider spacing means fewer lines and a faster finish. Check the label on your wadding: it says how far apart the stitching can be before it shifts in the wash.

Start in the middle and work out to each side. It keeps the layers flat. Put it into practice with the quick quilt projects.
