Do I need a special machine for quilting?
Usually not. A reliable home machine with a straight stitch and a walking foot handles most modern quilting projects.

Usually not. A dependable home machine with a good straight stitch can piece and quilt most modern projects, especially throws and baby quilts.
What helps
- A walking foot. The single most useful add-on for quilting layers.
- A quarter-inch foot. Keeps seam allowances consistent while piecing.
- A needle-down setting. Lets you pivot without the quilt shifting.
- Throat space. More room to the right of the needle makes big quilts easier to handle.
Before you upgrade
Get your current machine serviced, fit a fresh needle and clean out the lint. Many problems blamed on the machine disappear after that. Set up an extension table so the quilt’s weight doesn’t drag.
